Year in Review

The Year of 2020

As a wedding planner, I have the honor and pleasure of helping couples plan and design wedding celebrations to mark a big life transition and celebrate with the people they love most. I get to stand by my clients and be part of some of their best memories and now with the pandemic, some of their most challenging ones.

My heart goes out to all that were ready to plan their once-in-a-lifetime wedding celebrations, only to have COVID-19 completely crash the party.

Our Purpose

This year we had to re-examine our purpose; we reconsidered the guest list, day-of format, and flow. We discussed the practical considerations for gathering as it relates to sanitation, face coverings, food and beverage service, physical distancing, and guest communication.

Since the pandemic hit, I have been in the emotional trenches with my clients, wedding venues, and our vendor teams as we have had to postpone or cancel one event after the other. The 2020 we thought we were having abruptly changed, and now we are living in a new world, with a new set of gathering rules.

Since we are still in the midst of this pandemic, here is an article on what to consider when planning a wedding during a pandemic.

Planning a Wedding During the Coronavirus Pandemic

During the early stages of the pandemic, we had 5 of our couples, put their weddings on hold until 2021 in hopes it will be safe to travel and gather with family, friends and loved ones. We will see them in this coming year. I am hopeful.

However, we had the good fortune to celebrate with 8 couples this year. It was a full year despite rearranging priorities, reducing guest lists again and again, adapting to new modes of communication, and rethinking weddings completely.

Carrie & Caleb

Carrie & Caleb's wedding was our first wedding coming out of lock down in Wisconsin in August. They were married in the beautiful historical landmark building of Dane’s Hall of Waupaca. With the couple residing in Portland, Oregon, their wedding was very much a destination wedding...but in Wisconsin.  Even though their guest count was small, due to the pandemic, they were still able to celebrate with their closest friends and family!

Historical Charm

Dane's Hall of Waupaca is a place where hospitality and history come together. Carrie & Caleb hired a professional pianist to perform during their ceremony and cocktails on the 18th century grand piano to bring sight and sound to the wedding. Amazing!

Organic Inspired Decor

Carrie & Caleb's wedding design was done by Faye at Blooming Envy Flower Studio from Iola. Their designed was inspired by taking your common house plants and transforming them into their event decor. Then, gifting their guests with beautiful momentos to take home.

Bridal Fans

To continue with their unique and eco-friendly theme,  Carrie’s bridesmaids held lace fans as an alternative to floral bouquets.

Isaac & Sami

Isaac & Sami had a beautiful summer wedding at the end of August. This private property event at the Groom's family farm had style and sentiment at so many points of the wedding. In addition, it was the largest dance floor we have ever seen and it was the biggest dance party that lasted all night long.

Private Property

This wedding had all the intimacy and charm of a private family event but with 250 guests (I love large Wisconsin families!). The ceremony was on Isaac's grandparent's property and the wedding reception was next door at Isaac's parent's family farm.

Stunning Personal Design & Decor

Sami's Aunt was a professional florist & designer and she went ALL out to create beautiful floral designs for the wedding party, the ceremony and all the reception decor. It was such a beautiful gift!

The over arching sentiment of this amazing day was family. It was clearly marked by their faith, their love and the family that surrounded them. It has an honor to see such deep love in their families.

Lisa & Jason

Lisa & Jason had their wedding celebration at the historic Rothschild Pavilion. We love, love to return to this beautiful venue each year. However with this event, we had the privilege of coordinating their outdoor ceremony on the Rothschild island. The rain held off until the very last moment (whew!) and their day came together, smaller then they hoped, but just as beautiful and special!

Lisa's Dad officiated their wedding ceremony, which made the ceremony so personal and unique to who they were as a couple. He did share a story or two on the Bride's behalf.

Lisa & Jason were blending two families in their marriage. It was important to them to be surrounded by their family. So they chose to have their children be the wedding party.

Floral Design

Lisa had a clear eye for design and style. She worked with Flowers of the Field to design her gorgeous bridal bouquet. It definitely had the WOW factor she was going for.

Courtney & Ben

Courtney & Ben were originally planning their wedding at a local venue. However, due to the pandemic, the venue closed to all events for 2020. As difficult as the decision was for them, Courtney & Ben decided to have the wedding on their private property. It was a ton of work in preparation for the big day but in the end it couldn't have been more perfect for them. The memories of their smiling faces were the evidence that it was the best decision.

Private Property

With Courtney & Ben having their wedding on their private property meant they could create a day just the way they wanted.

Special Amimals

Courtney & Ben had some very special animal appearances at their wedding. Their dog, Motley, as their official ringbearer and a surprise visit from some cows at the reception.

Sweet Treat

They were not big "lovers" of cake so they went the non-tradition way and had a different sweet treat from the Fun Factory and provided gelato for dessert for their guests.

Jacki & Marc

Jacki & Marc made the difficult choice to get married in spite of the pandemic with a VERY small intimate wedding. They were from Chicago and wanted to be surrounded by family so they chose to come to Central Wisconsin. Their ceremony was at a park in Wisconsin Rapids on a pier out over the water. Then had their reception at a local restaurant, The Sky Club in Stevens Point , for a very small and intimate dinner.

Wedding Video

Their day was captured perfectly on film by TK Images with all the gorgeous fall colors.

Wellness Spa & Air BnB

Jackie & Marc with there event size being small really treated themselves and their guests to a local Spa + BnB that had all the lovely amenities to get married in luxury.

The dinner reception was in a private room which highlighted the events intimacy with beautiful floral touches from Blooming Envy Flower Studio.

Katie & Danny

Katie and Danny's wedding day was the PERFECT fall wedding...especially for an all outdoor event. The fall colors were at the Wisconsin peak. The Cottage Winery & Vineyard was so scenic with its Old World Italian Villa style. It was a perfect setting for their wedding day as they got engaged in Italy and Danny, having an Italian background himself. So perfect!!

Old World Little Italy Style

This was the perfect setting for Katie & Danny to have their Little Italy style wedding here in the Midwest surrounded by their families.

Sentamental Wedding Details

We loved this couple's attention to detail as to feature some of their family heritage in their wedding design. It made the event even more personal.

Vintage Car

Katie grew up with her Dad's vintage car collection. He surprised her by pulling into the wedding with her favorite vintage car. She was over-the-moon excited for wedding photos in this car.

Mystic Ponds Estates

We had the pleasure of being part of a team of wedding vendors to plan & design this Style Shoot at the Mystic Ponds Estates – A new wedding venue in Central Wisconsin.   This was styled to launch their grand opening.   Here is a taste of what we created.

This beautiful stylized shoot wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of these amazing vendors: Venue – Mystic Ponds Estate || Planning & Design – Distinctly Yours Wedding & Events, llc || Photography – Blessed and Beautiful Photography || Floral Design – Green Bee Floral Designs || Rentals – Party Envy Supplies || Videography – TK  Images || Models – Hannah & Daniel Petkau || Makeup & Hair Design – The Blushing Bride by Anastastia ||  Macrama bu Amy Barkalow || Invite Printing – Digi Copy || Food Truck – Stone Press Food Truck

Christina & Jake

Christina & Jake were a fun couple from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their wedding ceremony was held at Christina's childhood church were her Grandfather and most of her family still attend. It was such a beautiful church (and small) in Leopolis, WI. Their reception was held 45 minutes away at The Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Largest Wedding Party

Christina & Jake's wedding party was the largest we had ever had in 10 years of planning weddings. They had 34 wedding party members total. It was a large number of people to take care of but they were a whole lot of fun and...we didn't lose anyone from the ceremony to the reception.

This church was a very special part of Christina's family. They were able to create even more memories for them to cherish in this special place for her, Jake & their families.

No Peek

Christina & Jake read their personal letters to each other prior to the ceremony but did not see each other. It took some of the nerves out a bit for both of them but kept the first look to when she was walking down the aisle special.

Amelia & Tyler

Amelia & Tyler's wedding was the last of our weddings for 2020. However, it certainly wasn't the least. Their original wedding date was moved from July to November. My heart broke for them so many times in the planning process of moving and re-planning everything all over again. Let's just say it was no small feat that these two amazing people are married. I just want to say "THEY DID IT"!!!

Amelia & Tyler's ceremony was held at the beautiful St. Bronislavia Catholic Parish in Plover, WI. This was Amelia's childhood church and had lots of sentiment to have it there for her side of the family.

Best Cake Smash

Amelia didn't hold back during cutting the cake. She got Tyler GOOD!

With Amelia's career in healthcare and Tyler's career as a Health Inspector, they had all the amenities to keep their guests safe during their event and even added a touch of style and design to it.

We Did It!

It was an unprecedented year!   We were part of two new venues opening up in our local area.  This year at all different weddings, we were very humbled to have made the Dad’s speech, the Mother-of-the Bride’s speech, Best Man speech and a Bride’s speech.

To all our clients, thank you for trusting us with the most important days of your lives. It means so much to us that we get to be a small part of your big days. We love and appreciate you all so much.

To all the wedding pros we have had the pleasure of working with this year, thank you for making this “sometimes” very stressful job feel easy and joyous. It’s a privilege getting to collaborate with all of you. You’re amazing!

To Alex, Hannah & Jana, what in the world would I do without you? Thank you for being consistently awesome and for always going above and beyond. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

To Steve, Ian & Oliva, my family – Thank you for your unwavering support.  I love you!

What 2020 Did Not Do:

Break us.

I know that things will never be “the same” and that is okay.  We will change and adjust as needed.  It’s what we do.

But I will always be hopeful.  I love that we are going into this next year unbroken and smarter.  I love that our community is stronger and we are here for each other.

I am so proud of each one of my couples and their families.  Whether you have cried a little or a lot, whether you lost a little or a lot, or even tried a little or a lot…we did it…together!!!!

Have a blessed new year!  I am looking forward to it!!
