You’re engaged! Now what?Have you thought this or even said it out loud? This is totally normal! You haven’t planned a wedding before so why would you know where to begin or where to start. And that’s okay. (Deep cleansing breath!)
I am here to guide and give you just what you need to get started. It’s not hard…but it will take a little time. My advice in getting started is to start with number one and continue down the list. If you jump around, you will have to back track and that will cost you time and maybe even money. For example, I had a couple book the venue before starting to plan their guest list, which cost them to have to add a tent to their reception space because the venue was just too small for their “actual” number of guests.
Let’s get started…
1. Set a budget
There is a very good reason why this is #1! You need to know what you are starting with – whether you are paying for it yourself or are getting assistance from family members. Take this one seriously and don’t jump ahead. It will effect every decision you make from here on out. You don’t want to add financial stress later in your planning process.
2. Choose 2-3 possible wedding dates
This is where you check your calendars to see what works best for you. Yet, don’t forget to discuss it with your family to ensure there isn’t something you weren’t aware of (i.e. your cousin is getting married the week before). Also, having a few options will make it easier when call your ceremony and reception venue choices for availability.
3. Start your guest list
Yes, start getting an idea as far as who you would like to invite from your family, friends & workplace connections. This is a good time to involve your families to see who and how many will be on their guest list, too.
4. Decide on your wedding venue
This follows your budget and tallying your guest list to see what space and accommodations you will really need.
5. Decide on your wedding style, colors & design
I would advise choosing a style and design that represents the both of you. I have had many designs that are elegant and formal with a touch of comfortable that speaks to the style of the actual couple.
6. Research and inquire about wedding vendors (start with photographers, florists, caterers and a wedding coordinator)
This is a great time to start talking to your friends, family, co-workers or maybe your friend that just got married recently. Ask lots of questions and meet with the vendors, if possible. It is so important to get a sense if the vendor is the right fit for both of you. I have gone with my gut feeling many times.
7. Hire vendors
If you know they are a good fit, I would encourage you to book immediately to ensure availability. Please don’t assume their verbal acceptance will hold your date. I wholeheartedly believe that a signed contract is a must. It will bring much relief knowing you have a commitment.
8. WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING (Yes, this is the fun part of the list.)
Oh, enjoy this one! Treat yourself and take along those that matter the most to you. In my book, you only get married once, so have fun!
9. Wedding design & details
This is last on your checklist and will seem like the easiest on the list, but don’t underestimate all the details that go into a wedding day. I encourage you to work at the little details along the way. I have worked with so many couples that are deciding on all those details in the last couple months of planning. I guarantee if you do that your last couple months will be stressful and overwhelming. Start early! You will not regret it!
